Fall break is October 7-11. Monday, October 14, is a real day of school for everyone. For many years, it was a teacher inservice day and a holiday for students. Not so this year! Students should be back at school, ready to begin the second quarter on Monday, October 14.

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) will be administered to all sophomores and all juniors on the morning of Wednesday, October 16. Mrs. Banker, college counselor, will meet with sophomores (Tuesday, 10/1) and juniors (Thursday, 10/3) for a quick prep preview. Students have had access to practice materials for some time. Fall break might be a good time for students to prepare for the PSAT. Harding's Admissions Preview Day for the upper school (grades 7-12) is this Sunday, November 3, on the Cherry Road campus. This event is tailored for families who are considering Harding for their students who will be in grades 7-12 next school year. Preview Day registration opens at 1:30. Then at 2:00, the event begins with an assembly in Emmons Auditorium. Guests will have a chance to learn about Harding's mission and see how it plays out in various programs on campus. In the past, Preview Day (formerly called Open House) has been a come-and-go event, but this year there is a program. Guests will want to be here for the 2:00 assembly. Current families are urged to invite friends, co-workers, neighbors, and fellow church members to visit us. For more information, call our admissions office at 901-767-4494 or email Mrs. Karen Sills, administrative assistant. [email protected] …if it starts with us, it has to end with us. It’s our responsibility, as mothers, to do everything in our power to make sure we aren’t (even unknowingly) raising mean girls. http://www.ksl.com/?nid=1009&sid=26861581 This is a reminder to parents that Harding is out for Thanksgiving break on Wednesday (11/27), Thursday (11/28), and Friday (11/29). Monday and Tuesday that week are full days of school. Although everyone I know would like to start the holiday early, I ask that you please help us out by making sure we have your students in school on Monday and Tuesday. When I came to Harding (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), we were out only on Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving. Parents asked if they could take their children out of school for a half day Wednesday. Then we began giving half day on Wednesday. Parents began asking if they could have all day Wednesday. So, we now take all day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and—you guessed it—parents want to check their children out on Tuesday. Since we already have a full week of fall break in October, we cannot take another full week at Thanksgiving. If we did, we'd have to go to school until the middle of June! Help us out, please, by observing the holiday as it is set. If there is an unusual, once-in-a-lifetime situation, call or email me. If your student is new to Harding, he or she may not realize that just about every student participates in every dress up day. The students who do not are few and far between. If a student chooses not to participate, however, he or she should simply wear normal school uniform attire. These are the dress up days for next week:
Modesty and appropriateness are key words. Costumes must be at least knee-length. Students may not wear tops that expose the midriff or are off the shoulders. See my post last week about work nights for students in 9-12 next week. Harding Academy is sponsoring a drive to collect new shoes to be given to children in Honduras. The drive will run through October 3. The shoes should be new, kid-sized shoes, and it's best if they are tennis shoes. Brittain (10) and Will Lawrence (8) presented the idea in chapel on Monday, September 16. Brittain went on a mission trip to distribute shoes last summer and has another trip planned for the summer of 2014. We have 531 students in the upper school. Our goal is to collect 531 pairs of shoes. More important, we want every student to participate. Please encourage your student to contribute at least one pair of shoes.
